Are you in construction?
Firstly a big thank you to all who commented and offered your support last week. It really does make this curation project a pleasure. So let’s dive straight in to this week’s fare.
The strange title this week comes from an innovative new HOA Guess My Line (http://goo.gl/A32k5b). Brought to you by Michael Daniels and featuring Terry Leigh Britton, Heather Kraafter, Debi Davis and Andrew Hatchett I defy you not to laugh at this. The mystery guest round is a hoot just look at those blindfolds! See if you can guess the Plusser behind the Minnie Mouse voice. I think there is a definite need for these lighter HOAs - just the thing to wind down a little after a long day. Well done guys.
Funny featured strongly in Top 10 tips on using humour in marketing, with Amy Harrison! (http://goo.gl/yQtFOP). martin shervington talked with the hilarious Amy Harrison. There is, of course, a serious side to the show in that humour can be very effective in getting your message across. Solid content marketing advice. Well worth watching.
If you need some help with the creative elements of your business then a couple of HOAs that aired this week may be useful. The Mia Connect Power Chat - Shiny Graphics & Images! (http://goo.gl/7C3n0V) featured some of my favourite creative talents on the Plus. Mia Voss does an excellent job of letting the expertise of Susan Finch, Ryan J. Rhoades, Jeff Sieh and Aaron Wood shine through. As you would expect from the Power Chat a wealth of information served with liberal helpings of fun. Best line from Jeff - A six year old could do what I do with 18 years of practice! The #BatCrapCrazy blow-by-blow #timestamp post (http://goo.gl/JILBmF) will get you what you need quickly.
It was good to see the return of #OnTrackTips this week. The show that helps your business one expert at a time gave us Launch Your First Internet Product Using Video - James Wedmore (http://goo.gl/v3vdRq). James Wedmore has a lot of experience using YouTube for launching products and in this show he packs in a lot of information for anyone looking to launch a product. Jason T. Wiser also demonstrates the value of repurposing content with the useful #timestamp post (http://goo.gl/8b4wih)
Is there a Doctor in the house?
Only one Stone Temple Consulting HOA this week but what a show it was. In Give Me Structure or Give Me Death (http://goo.gl/Bi8Bt7) Eric Enge, Mark Traphagen and David Amerland get down to the nitty gritty of structured data and how it relates to Semantic Search. If you had any queries regarding schema.org markup or anything else related to structured data you’re sure to get the answer in this show. For me the most important point is that using structured data on your website shows that you value what you’re doing and sends a signal that you care about your website visitors.
A whole lotta Ammon
If you haven’t already circled Ammon Johns do so now. Ammon has amassed a great deal of knowledge and expertise in relation to SEO and Internet Marketing. More importantly he shares this knowledge freely (don’t you just love how often that happens here?). This week you have three chances to benefit from his knowledge. Ammon can be found regularly on #isoosichat talking about SEO and marketing. This week’s show Resistance to SEO - When Professions Collide (http://goo.gl/ztUJ4L) sees Ammon, Bill Slawski and Erik Stafford joined by Susan Finch and Michelle Lowery looking at the conflicts between professionals in the SEO and Marketing fields. Always lots to be gleaned from these ISOOSI Chats.
Next Ammon appeared alongside Lee Smallwood (NOD3x) and host David Amerland in the Social Media Today Power Talk discussing Social Media Analytics (http://goo.gl/o13N8s) and the ROI (this shall be known as Return On Involvement from now on, h/t Lee) of your Social Media Marketing. Top quote from Ammon KPIs Kill Productivity Instantly! Fantastic show that attracted a lot of attention from the community. John Dietrich gave us A #Bromance is born! (http://goo.gl/yAc5FQ) and Marilyn Moore gave an impressive summary post Do ROI and Social Media Belong Together in the Same Sentence? (http://goo.gl/4mWq3c). Brilliant community!
We were treated to a solo Ammon when he joined Zara Altair for Midweek Zap - Less is More (http://goo.gl/0suyin). Lots of sound information and advice, and answers to some audience questions. If you need any more convincing of Ammon’s generosity with information just take a look at the detailed responses in the comment stream. Grizwald Grim has provided another incredibly useful #timestamp post here (http://goo.gl/K9dRri). Thanks Grizwald.
Neal Schaffer takes the spotlight
I never tire of listening to Neal Schaffer and this week we have 30 minutes in his company courtesy of Stephan Hovnanian’s Google+ Business Spotlight (http://goo.gl/3axcov). I love the condensed format, rapid fire tips. Great job from guest host Mike Allton too. Watch it now!.
Spreading the Word
We all love this platform but quite often I hear from people outside the platform who just don’t get it. Well from this point onwards I’m going to send them a link to New To Google+? (http://goo.gl/IeVNRK) from Ray Hiltz. A succinct but comprehensive post proudly listing all the good stuff offered by this great platform. Top job Ray!
Thinkers corner
A couple of post this week relating to the attention economy and the difficulties of getting yourself heard. Bruce Marko gives us Shall we play a game (http://goo.gl/dcu9Qy) - an examination of the need for an imaginative strategy peppered with military examples where the few overcame or resisted the many. It’s sensible advice to play to your strengths so what will your strategy be to differentiate in the content warzone?
Colin Walker explores consistency and value in Accountability (http://goo.gl/28Sxzj). There’s no doubting that sometimes meeting the expectations of your audience is difficult but meet those expectations you must or risk tarnishing your reputation. To borrow the last line of the post the show must go on!
And finally…
This may be my only reference to the World Cup in these #FridayFavourites (can’t promise though). Teodora Petkova has unearthed a funny photo comparison (http://goo.gl/3paUGl). It’s all about the shades!
Have a great weekend wherever you are

One of my favourite shows this week ... The Midweek Zap - Less is More. Grazie to the clever, witty and funny man, Ammon Johns and the gentle host, Zara Altair.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for that, Kevin Burns
ReplyDeleteThank you! Kevin Burns
ReplyDeleteI've got a first draft of eight Q's ginned up for David Amerland in your show next Wed. I can provide to you/him in advance or spring them live (via copy/paste from Word doc into comments stream). It's all about preparation ... the rest goes like we're talkin' chum. ;)
ReplyDeleteAmmon Johns, de rien mon ami. By now, you may have seen another version of the "funny man Ammon" theme I posted on David's site.
ReplyDeleteKevin Burns save them for then. Keeps the flow fresh :)
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for sharing Zara Altair and a good weekend to all :-)
ReplyDeleteCopy David Amerland. Did a green room check with Zara Altair, we had a lot of fun. You both said what I figured you would say: "not scripted" & "keep it fresh". I want to know Mick Sharpe's method(s) to curate all the juicy stuff into the +FridayFavourites. An excellent treatment that deserves an Emmy of sorts.
ReplyDeleteNo secret Kevin Burns - I watch, I read, I write ;-)
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of watching, reading ... observing ... writing mate. Good stuff Mick Sharpe! Lights out long by now over the pond ...
ReplyDeleteThe old rule about 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration is true of all the great serial posts, isn't it, Mick Sharpe ?
ReplyDeleteOk, what are you doin' up at this late hr mate Ammon Johns? I'm busting out laughing at the prospect that any of you guys being awake now. 1:25 am GMT. You just keep doing the funny ... but alas, this is what you do.
ReplyDeleteIt's Friday. No school tomorrow, mum! I'm up late with a beer, catching up on all the small things and conversations of the week, in between the current notifications. :)
ReplyDeleteOne of the Q's I have in mind for a few chaps ... what is one of your favourite beers? Me, Yuengling Lager, made not far from me in the oldest brewery in the U.S. They beat all others by a mile on a quality/taste/price comparison.
ReplyDeleteOh man, it varies so much by context. Like a great 'lunchtime' beer for a sunny day in England is "Bombardier". Unless I'm having a ploughman's lunch, when I'll usually want a Newcastle Brown Ale to accompany it. But in the evening, that would usually become a pint of Theakston's "Old Peculier". (Old Peculier is a gorgeous rich beer that tastes somewhat like a cross between a home-brewed stout, with a hint of guinness, and a sweet nutty tone).
ReplyDeleteOk, you're hitting me with some phrases ("ploughman's lunch") and beers (""Bombardier" & Theakston's "Old Peculier") I'm not (yet!) familiar with. But alas, I've had Newcastle Brown Ale a few times, thanks to one of my brothers ... a true beer aficionado. All this beer talk makes me want to bring to life the best pub imaginable. Tall tale for sure, but ... it would being much jolly to a few good chaps.
ReplyDeleteYears ago I suggested a system of networking bars all over the world together for video chat, making each a daytime venue for business video conferencing in more informal atmosphere. Each booth or 'snug' would be capable of holding a private video chat, while the main bar areas of all of the bars could be seen.
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion was to call them Free Union Bars (FUBARs) :)
Just an exercise in how to get daytime use back into many bars, and somewhat reinvent the future of the pub as a social venue for the modern age.
That just might be my sort of venue ... although not so much in the daylight hours, rather more like during the wee hours when I know I've earned my keep and can rest my brain a tad, whence to take on the joyful malty, hoppy, pure and happy, effervescent lubricants. What is day to one is night to another, so we will have to go with all of time, as you conceived, to accommodate the many around the globe in this lofty venture. Big screens, richly adorned pubs, local craft brew parlors, bars and all, you do have a theme worthy of realization, cara Ammon Johns.
ReplyDeleteWhat a marvellous thread this has become. You're right Ammon Johns for most things there are no shortcuts, one can only hope to become more proficient with practice. And beer :D
ReplyDeleteAlas Broon is no longer brewed on the Tyne and it must be some years since I've had a bottle of dog. The last time may have been in the USA where I was surprised by its popularity. No arguments with Bombardier and Old Peculier either, both quality beers. I think I need to check and see what's in the cupboard!
Mick Sharpe Ammon Johns Kevin Burns You all are cracking me up. Unfortunately, in the U.S. even places that call themselves "pubs" are not.
ReplyDeleteOn Old Peculiar...seems like the perfect beer for a #friendlycurmudgeon
