Everything starts with a blank page.

Every world changing idea, every book, every poem, every new piece of artwork…it all starts at the same place.

It starts at the intersection of apathy and emptiness and lies beyond that place where “the way things are” suddenly becomes “the way things were”.

It starts when you decide to ignore the way things have been done before and forge a new path beyond the well-worn trails.

It all starts with a decision to put your pen to the blank page, your brush to the canvas, or when you decide to start tapping away at the keys.

The creative process is not one that just falls out of the sky and presents you with a brand new thing. It is a process by which you can strengthen yourself and sharpen your skills through repetition, practice, and more practice.

I hate this fact, personally. Growing up in a world of microwaves, TV-on-demand, and instant noodles – I have been conditioned to expect things instantaneously.

Try asking people how much they love patience and watch them cringe.

But I’m learning to appreciate the process.

I’m learning to appreciate how insanely creative all of us are and can be if we just make the choice to continue working at it.

And suddenly a page that was blank when I began no longer is – and inspiration, encouragement, and hope for the future has been created.

The next time you feel discouraged about whatever it is that you create – remember it all starts blank.

Put your pen to the paper, your fingers on the keys, your brush to the canvas, and just begin.
