HOA audience
I'm not sure about the "fork" but I appreciate the call to courtesy.

Hangout on air audience quick tip:
When attending/watching a hangout on air show, remember there are a limited number of comments on the event page. Please be respectful of this. HOAs are fun to watch and participate in, but idle banter that has nothing to do with the live show and that eats up comment space may get disruptive and frustrating for other attendees/viewers.

It's kind of like when a group of friends sit down to watch their favorite TV show together, and are discussing the episode as it unfolds...but then there's a couple people having their own loud conversation in the room. Would you be upset if that happened to you? Disruptive and distracting, isn't it?

Tip for hosts: add an image
You can "fork" the comments on your event page by adding a photo. Some hosts like to do this as they get close to the comment limit, but why not do it up front? Like having a separate room (a "lounge" or "peanut gallery" come to mind) for your guests to go and have their off-topic conversations (not sure how that works with comment tracker, or if you'd want to encourage that kind of behavior from your audience in the first place, but either way, it's an idea).
