A shorter than usual post as I’ve had to deal with some personal events this week. That said the shows and posts I have managed to see this week have been absolutely top notch and well worth a look. Normal service should be resumed next week.
Mia Voss obviously enjoyed this special edition of the The Mia Connect Power Chat with Temple Grandin (http://goo.gl/mLrElT) (another one off the bucket list) Just under 24 minutes of a very interesting interview with lots of thoughts on animal welfare, autism and society in general. Very hard to disagree with any of this. I found the point on exposure to different experiences (in education and life) to be particularly relevant today - if you don’t see and feel it, you’ll never know if you’ll like it. Don’t let bad become normal. Really glad to have caught this.
Wade Harman’s The Baer Truth About Social Marketing (http://goo.gl/NVkv38) was the show of the week for me. Jay Baer sharing his knowledge and experience of social media and marketing. Some great advice on differentiation, consistency, using your talents and interests to best effect, nurturing your audience and above all, putting in the effort. Guest host Mark Traphagen described the HOA as a show of highlights - he wasn’t wrong. The quote that really got me was: Everybody wants a recipe, and if you think you need a recipe, then no recipe can help you! Yeah, don’t be scared to come up with your own answers. Really enjoyable show.
The Art Of Business Names: What's The Story? Blended Careers & How That Helped Us Name Our Business (http://goo.gl/xhJL0g) is a fine example of how to put together a great piece of content that will get your business noticed. Gina Fiedel has a knack for storytelling and this piece takes you through the birth of Fat Eyes Web Development, framed by Gina and Doug’s earlier work as artists. I’m really glad you didn’t listen to that printer Gina. Yes you’ll have to click through to the website article to find out the relevance - but you were going to anyway ;-)
James Dearsley is still living up to the promise with The Midweek Marketing Mix (http://goo.gl/NEUdml) kicking off with an overview of the Showcase app for HOAs (actually used during the show). You will pick up some useful tips to get back to the event comments if you’re unfamiliar with navigating around the new app. Christine DeGraff gave us the latest news from the world of Google including the Twitch TV purchase. Sarah Hill talks about her use of HOAs in her work with Veterans United. There’s no doubt that Sarah is really doing great things in this #HumanMedia arena (I probably need to change this text-based delivery!) Kath Dawson discusses SEO and Content Marketing giving an overview of some recent HOAs (a couple for me to get back to later). Followed up with some guidance to get you started with your own content marketing. Mike Allton was this week’s special guest with an overview of his latest book The Unofficial Book On HootSuite and how he uses the social media management tool in his own daily activities. It was refreshing to hear Mike’s reasoning for the book was to help make the technology transparent - can’t fault that. I may have to take a closer look. It’s hard to convey just how much is packed into this show. Take a look at the #timestamp post (http://goo.gl/jMiWPk) from The Digital Marketing Bureau.
Episode 35 of the #ISOOSIChat Video Marketing - the unfair advantage (http://goo.gl/WqhbvN) provides a wealth of information that will be of interest if, or should I say when, you’re ready to start using video. Some great insights from guests Scott Scowcroft and Mark Timberlake and regulars Erik Stafford, Bill Slawski and Ammon Johns. There’s no doubting that video is becoming more and more accessible for all businesses and it pays to be as informed as possible. You will want to come back to this one several times. Always good stuff from the ISOOSI team with the bonus that you’ll know what to do if you ever get locked in a room!
Old people don’t scroll
Time management was the subject of the second show in Jason T. Wiser’s Budget your life series. 6 Vital Steps to Using a Google Calendar (http://goo.gl/5rPbco) has Phyllis Khare giving some very useful advice for going beyond the task list and blocking out the actual time required on your calendar. Yes it’s an eye opener when you do it this way! I have to admit I’ve had a few Fridays from Hell because of pushing back incomplete tasks. If you’re short on time dip in to the choice bits with the ever helpful #timestamp post (http://goo.gl/ZnAmJ0)
Thinkers corner
Colin Walker compares Google+ to TV soap operas in Personal (http://goo.gl/J4zIkf). Can’t disagree with some of the similarities - the addictive nature of both (after you have become invested). Colin’s observation of how much, or how little, really personal stuff we share publicly fired up the grey matter again. It all relates to that triangle of Trust, Reputation and Authority. A fine balance that I’m sure we all find difficult at times.
And finally…
