What is a widget (in this scenario)? It is a useful tool or information display (such as a mortgage interest calculator) that has simple code that can be copied to display it on any website.
Site owners like widgets because they can add value to their site for visitors. Widget creators like them because they can embed a link back to their own site in the widget.
But anyone aware of Google's massive anti-link-spam campaigns in recent years may fear (and not without cause) that such massive link building could get the widget producer in some Google penalty hot water.
