Sometimes I feel like that little kid...

Sometimes I feel like that little kid...
You know the one, the one that didn't see the Emperor's new clothes.
This afternoon I went to the local branch of the local bookstore Powell's Books, Inc..
I try to stay calm, I've noticed before that employees there do not read books, they are just employment units. Not like the old days when you went into a book store and had conversations about books, writers, narrative style, etc. as part of the experience.
I took one book to see if it passed the buying algorithm. While I was waiting in line I saw this sign.
Am I the only person who buys textbooks even though I'm not in college anymore when I want to learn something new?
When I commented on the implied limited adult learning model I got two divergent replies.
"We try to keep textbook theft down." Hmmm. That still leaves the student with the stolen book SOOL. And, is a bit like putting railings up around the canals of Venice.
and
"Talk to them."
"Them?"
"The management."
"Isn't that a bit like saying you did it because those were your orders?"
I'm standing by my original perception that this is an anti-learning policy.

Very interesting. And I agree Zara Altair it is like anti learning. I love reading books and there are some class books that are just so interesting! One of my favorites was Anatomy of Attitudes by Dr. David Brown
ReplyDeleteDeborah Rock I get very wary when a bookstore, of all places, starts limiting the exchange process for information. I understand the management intention but also know how the road to Hell is paved. :)
ReplyDeleteYup.... With good intentions. Also, that places limits of learning for
ReplyDeletethose who are not in school. I hope you can find a bookstore that will
feed your thirst for knowledge!
Deborah Rock Usually buy online and internationally but this just pushed some of my we are regulating for you buttons. This is the largest independent bookstore in the world. Just not cool.
ReplyDeleteOh man, that is... I have no words to explain the hatred I feel for this moronic policy. Ok, to be honest, I do have a few words and none of them would pass the censor button.
ReplyDeletePhil Bowyer :)))))
