Childhood Memories

I was raised by a German Shepherd mix, Big Boy. He was with me when I played in the garden, still in diapers, and barked to bring me back when I went out too far in the water at the beach.

Hanging clothes on the line next to my Grandmother as we chatted. The rhythm of placing the clothes on the line, clipping with the wooden pins, the the next garment.

My hand going through the wringer on the washing machine. Sitting in a chair in the living room watching the ooze with Big Boy at my feet.

Digging a trench for a game in C.B.'s back yard only to find out we had just dug up his Mom's newly planted vegetable garden.

Playing in the forbidden sagebrush and the scent of sage as we ran, irregardless of the rattlesnakes we never saw.

Playing a game of tag where the rule was to stay on the wood of the felled trees. Jumped on a stump only to discover it was a slow burning stump covered with ash on top as hot coals fell into my shoes.

Riding bareback on 20-year-old Queenie up on the mesa every weekend among the Eucalyptus trees. She shied at the sound of a car even if it was a mile away.

Riding in my uncle's panel truck to check the irrigation sprinklers in various flower fields.

Ocean air of southern California.

Aunt Maude standing in the doorway of the kitchen, swinging the screen door open and closed as she recited the daily gossip from her 2 mile walk.

Riding our bicycles for miles with my friend Susie. Then stopping under a tree and climbing to the top.

Scrambling over huge boulders, following my Dad up a mountain, not exactly the "trail" way, just up.

The scent of bacon and eggs over the camp fire.
