Almonds

When I was four we moved from Benicia to Walnut Creek in California. At that time there were many walnut orchards. But in our yard we had almond trees. My Dad went out with a long pole to knock the almonds off the tree. I would scurry around picking up almonds to collect them into a basket.

I loved the nutcracker. Sitting around the table shelling almonds was a family event. Three bowls: one for the almonds, one for the shells, one for the nuts after the shells were removed. We talked and laughed and told stories.

My Mom's family was originally from Texas and pralines were a super, sugar snack. She made almond pralines from the almonds.

Almonds are still my favourite snack. I often have a small bowl on the desk when I know it's going to be a long day.

  2. Leila Martin My Mom was born in San Diego. My grandmother, her sisters, and her brother all came from Midland County. My great, great, great, great grandfather Samuel May Williams was one of the founding scoundrels of Texas. :)
