Structured data directs Google search to the meaning of significant words in your content. When you label the content with markup you tell search exactly what the “meaning” is on your site.

You don’t have to do markup, but it gives search a very clear signal.

Google’s Webmaster Tools offers a shortcut for markup called the Data Highlighter. Your site must be connected to Webmaster Tools. Under Search Appearance go to Data Highlighter. Enter a page from your site and highlight the text you want to connect. Follow the steps. The Data Highlighter will even find similar pages on your site for you to add.

It takes a little extra time, but it is a shortcut to adding tags to your site.
