THE AWKWARDNESS OF THE DIAMOND

THE AWKWARDNESS OF THE DIAMOND
Pressed and pressed and pressed and pressed.
Ignorant of sunlight.
Moon changes unseen but for vague earth tremors.
Underground knowledge gathers to undisclosed facets.
How it waits there imagining unknown light in a time
So long nothing counts or cares
But the diamond
In patience forming transparency in darkness.
Deep. It dreams deep in the earth’s restless movement.
Growing harder and, yet, more transparent
’Til some thrust, violent or gentle, submits it to sunlight
Where it speaks those subterranean fantasies
Over and over
Remembering the earth of its conception.
