Emotional State and Emotional Intelligence

Emotional State and Emotional Intelligence

Food for thought from Gideon Rosenblatt on what is normal, what is perceived as normal, facing negative emotions, "treating" perceived negative emotions with drugs, and more.

The New Emotional Intelligence

We are moving into a world where our emotions will not only be more easily detectable (by affective computing) but more easily manipulated (by new drugs).

There are so very many important implications for this shift in what we mean by "emotional intelligence." One of the trickier ones to talk about is the degree to which reducing or eliminating emotional pain might interfere with our growth as individuals. I say "trickier" because on the one level, it seems needlessly cruel to withhold drugs that might ease painful emotional experiences for someone. On the other hand, and this is more of a spiritual/psychological development perspective, sometimes the friction caused by emotional turmoil is what causes us to grow and learn.

In a world where the option to set aside negative emotional experiences becomes more prevalent, what are the consequences for us as individuals, and as a society?

  1. Thank you, Zara Altair, and thanks for the comments on the original post. This is very tricky terrain. I was just talking with someone who is worried about this technology being used in ways that rip open the internal emotional states of people who are having a hard time managing their emotional state. Very, very tricky questions here.
