Is Social Media a Mobocracy?
Not so long ago, Social Media was seen by many businesses as the realm of unicorns and rainbows.
“I love you. You love me, We’re a happy family.”
Well, wheres there’s fairies, there’s ogres. (or Vampires, if you’re a True Blood fan.)
The platforms have matured.
Social media is taken more seriously by companies - as an accommodating place for their marketing Trojan horses.
Social media promised to be the great democratizer.
As in “real life” democracy is messy and without any “governing” body it’s vulnerable to mob rule.
Freedom comes with responsibilities.
One of the greatest is to treat others as you would have them treat you.
Yes, the Golden Rule.
The dark side of social.
A recent post by Gini Dietrich ( http://goo.gl/kM6uiv ) casted a another light on the dark side of social media.
One of the examples she cites is of Justine Sacco ( http://goo.gl/tSqALK ) who earlier this year broke her silence after she lost her job and went into hiding after tweeting this unfortunate message:
“Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!”
... “After she tweeted that gem, she got on an 11-hour flight that didn’t have an Internet connection and went to sleep. The social media mob went nuts. Her tweet went viral and the hashtag, #HasJustineLandedYet , trended globally while people gleefully waited to see what would happen.”
What happened was her boss bowed to the mob and fired her while she was still on the flight without hearing her side of the story.
Another more tragic case and all too familiar story, is of a teenager, a beautiful girl from Nova Scotia, Rehtaeh Parsons, ( http://goo.gl/WNmdDK ) who was raped and then mocked mercilessly on social media until she could take no more.
What can we do as good social media citizens to, if not completely stop this monstrous behaviour, at least not to pick up our own pitchfork and join the mob?
Gini, in the referenced post, wrote her own golden rule list:
For more details go to: http://goo.gl/np73Y9
- If someone wrongs you, talk to them privately.
- Don’t jump on the bandwagon.
- Be professional in your discourse.
- Take time to learn both sides.
- Remember there are human beings on the other side.
- Live the Golden Rule.
