Science and Search: No Longer a Big Pain in the ____
Two of my greatest annoyances with searching in Google Scholar:
1) The amount of results that have been manipulated to rise to the top (in other words, there's a whole lotta SPAM!). Please see http://goo.gl/fG32bu for an in-depth article on the subject.
2) The content which rises to the top is generally what has been cited the most, and therefore the most current information is rendered helpless to compete. #AintNobodyGotTime4That
Now let's consider Sparrho.
Sparrho provides something new, and while I don't want to tell you too much about it because I'd never want to rid someone of the pure joy of discovery, I'll just say that it has me rolling in learning and splendor. I'm so pleased with the ability Sparrho affords to customize search settings that enable users to “teach” the engine - AND the ability to save searches "in channels that include various searches organized by key terms and algorithm" is slammin'! Users can mark results as relevant or irrelevant and look forward to better results the next time round.
I love this bit in Sparrho's Google Plus Introduction:
We hope that by making scientific content more discoverable, we'll save you time lost searching, and reveal those elusive serendipitous connections behind your next eureka moment.
Ping: Alexandra Riecke-Gonzales, Andrij Harasewych, Bill Slawski, Mark Traphagen, John Kellden, Robert Headley, John Moore, Zara Altair, Tony Dimmock, Imran Sq, Jeff Bond... just a few from the top of my head who I think might geek out over this. =)

Kristin Drysdale Thanks for finding this. What a trove. My search experience before was pretty much like yours. I really appreciate your discovery. I'd probably be there all night...except...working.
ReplyDeleteOh - you made me smile so big with that Zara Altair!!! Funny you mention "trove" because I made a collection after finding this and my original tagline for it included that word. I eventually made edits due to trying to optimize my message for the space allowed... but still → a trove, INDEED! =D
ReplyDeleteKristin Drysdale Indeed.
