Where Conversation is Real and Bogus

If you pay attention to Search Optimization you need to hang out on this Hangout every Tuesday.

The hour long conversation goes in many directions with many nuggets buried.

There's the after Hangout conversation as well which sometimes goes on for hours.

And there's the comment stream where something like this on niche search from Ammon Johns  appears hours later.

Incidentally, for those who watched and wondered, the reason that I tend to disagree about Niche Search just a bit is that there are certain markets Google just haven't been able to dominate, places where people start searching without even thinking about Google. In other words, getting away from the 'default' association with search being Google that Duane Forrester  talked about quite early in the hangout.

Obviously, we know that one of the biggest rivals to Google is, well, still Google, in that Youtube is very much used to search for and find answers to a huge variety of information from beauty tips to recipes, gaming reviews to carpentry.

But other places that 'buck' search include Amazon and Ebay, each of which are pretty much seen by many consumers as being 'shopping search' engines. While, of course, those of us who live and breathe search would argue the definitions, the fact remains that those companies are some of the few that form an alternate starting point for a quite widespread style of search.

Of course, as I'm sure Duane would point out as readily as I, Google have made ventures themselves into shopping search, just as they did with price comparison 'search' engines, and while Google really didn't attain any great degree of a viable product (yet) in those areas, just the fact that they showed interest worried off a lot of investors, making future investment in many forms of niche search unlikely, and seen as too risky._

We have no idea yet who will actually turn up, and that's how we like it.
