Ontologies
Video, Podcast, Notes
Oleg Moskalensky and David Amerland in conversation and answering questions on ontologies and how they build the essence of you (your entity) across all of your presence on the web.
Whether you write for yourself, your business, or another entity the grand overview of that entity is the message of you.
Semantic writing is part of the web presence generated by any one person or business. When you create text that correlates with the overall message of the entity, the ontologies are stronger.
Starting any piece of writing for the web relational concepts matter. It's why I create two sets of metaconcepts (keyword) lists for each client article:
One for the entity (business or person)
One for the specific article.
Before you start writing, consider how what your text will add to the overall ontology of the entity.

Thank you, Zara Altair, for everything! 😎
ReplyDeleteGreat intro.
ReplyDeleteOleg Moskalensky Thank you. A very important conversation.
ReplyDeleteGina Fiedel Thank you.
At roughly 9 min, David Amerland explains that posting things to Gplus, etc that are not part of your 'identity' in search impedes the strength of your identity. Am I to realize that my posts on personal items, such as +CraftBeerRandy or my #walkabouts should be removed? I'd considered those to be 'colour' in the midst of marketing, search and social info.
ReplyDeleteRandy Milanovic Great question. When David Amerland awakes, I am certain we will get an answer. :)
ReplyDeleteI will be very interested to see how David Amerland answers your question, Randy Milanovic, but I'll go out on a shaky limb to say my impression is that it's not clear cut in the way you mention. While it might paint a simpler more one-dimensional picture , if you only stick to one subject at all times you would also be eliminating a richness.
ReplyDeleteThose things you do are part of your identity and are in line with who you are in terms of your values and behaviors. It's all you. Consistently. He's talking about organization also and grouping of information also there. And ratios, balance, clarity.
And one more thing- you are also attracting and creating relationships with people by your choices and actions and that can't be minimized in importance.
But hey! I may be wrong.
Gina Fiedel I'm of a similar mind Gina.
ReplyDeleteGina Fiedel answered that pretty well Randy Milanovic. This is where things get a little tricky. We want people to be fully-fleshed entities so their digital signature will be, out of necessity, a little diffuse. But we also want them to be clear on what they do and their values and so on. A clear idea of identity creates a defined core and allows the rest of the content to flow around it.
ReplyDeleteThe discussion we'd been having where we want "people to be a little more like brands and brands a little more like people" centers around that. We do not usually spend a lot of time defining who we are and we spend even less time thinking about the impact and perception of what we share in view of that definition. But we should spend time thinking about both. A digital identity is slightly more shaped than an offline one, but no less real.
Thanks, David Amerland and now with your great answer and prompting, re-reading my answer, I can totally see what I was missing there.
ReplyDeleteWhile addressing our public persona I didn't think further (or backward) to include what happens internally to produce that self-aware identity. It makes so much sense given that we spend a good deal of our time fleshing out and defining our identity (or should), that also how we direct and illustrate about what we know about ourselves; the impact and perception is elemental. The way you say it totally illuminates, brings the parts of the package together. I love that about how you explain things. Thanks!!
Gina Fiedel I am really glad it helped. :)
ReplyDeleteDavid Amerland thank you David. I'm going to interpret that the parts that make us unique! 👍🏻
