Social Media in the 21st Century
Social Media in the 21st Century
David Amerland on the role of social media in our current environment.
Social media is the natural, digitally created extension of the strong, inherited evolutionary social instinct that succeeded in creating vibrant communities, cities, and nations out of disparate hunter-gatherer tribes, populated by self-serving individuals. That ancient instinct kept us “safe” and growing in largely homogenous social groups that shared a language, creed, and physical characteristics. Its digital counterpart has the ability to now transcend borders and time zones, language barriers and belief systems, connecting people with each other and creating fresh digital tribes, communities, and nations that are disruptive of the established old order of the physical world.

Is it the end of the world or just social media?
Neither would you believe, or maybe both. For those who think one or the other my Talent Zoo piece will provide some answers.

Zara Altair thank you for sharing this and given how our societies are evolving right now it shall be really interesting to see what effect all this connectivity will have.
ReplyDeleteDavid Amerland I see the powerful connections that have evolved on social media. I'm thinking about how I use twitter in a completely different way than I did when it first started. Or, how Google+ has become a place where we build awareness and share information on an ongoing basis.
ReplyDeleteOur earlier brief exchange is an example. My daughter who currently lives in England found the Medium article https://goo.gl/arSALs and shared it on Facebook. Then I responded in my Mom mode but immediately thought of you and shared it with you. That interchange was a great example of how information spreads across social media spreads ideas.
We were each one, but within the set of ones, information was shared. I believe this is the true power of social media in times of change. Viral is viral, but thought exchange has power to reshape each of us. This is how change happens because we act as instruments of change with those data bits.
Zara Altair yes! We amplify each other's power of one and it actually can become something quite huge as the Arab Spring demonstrated. Fingers crossed.
