Today I'm practicing with the new Google+. Ten minutes in and I'm missing Mentions.

Like the rear-view mirror in a vehicle, I didn't realize how often I use it until it's not there.

  1. I also miss rear-view mirror when I got promoted to co-pilot status in our car.

  2. What's going on, Zara Altair? I know I've been away from The Plus in a meaningful way for some time - but it's all gone a bit, well - I don't know whether it's good or bad 0_o

  3. Jason Darrell 'pear shaped' is the expression you are looking for - but fruits are good for us and pears are good too!
Sorry couldn't stop myself from that.

  4. I miss mentions most Zara Altair it was a convenient way to keep up with ongoing conversations.

  5. That was the phrase on the tip of my tongue, Vivekananda Baindoor Rao. Guess G+ should get back to its core values…
…that was as rotten as yours, Viv, sorry :-(

  6. Jason Darrell Next week the old G+ is gone. I'm practising.

  7. Ron Serina Yes. Google is progressing from engagement to data collections. I will miss the Mentions features.

  8. Where can I learn about the new G+, Zara Altair? And why sacrifice mentions?

They're a key component of making the system work.

Think too many people are just cherry-picking their notifications and not getting involved in the stream?

Got to admit that's the way I've used G+ for years.

  9. Jason Darrell well, Google+ is becoming part of 'Core Services' if you are a Google Apps for Work paying customer to Google.
Yeah you do have rotten pears if you are not one of the fully paid up members of the 'Google Apps for Work' Club!

  10. Wow. Pay-to-use social.

    What's the price for entry?

Moreover, what's the price for abandonment?

I've done without G+ for the best part of a year. Don't think I'll miss it.

I would have done if this announcement had come in 2013/14. That's when G+ was rocking.

But with Communities, Collections and Hangouts, there's so much to do around your 'self', the conversation's died…

…as has Vic G's dream, it seems.

  11. Jason Darrell What Vivek said. For information on G+ Denis Labelle has the stuff. And f*ck, I can't find the link to the post in the new G+. Glad I'm in training now.

  12. Yes! I've been trying to get used to new G+ and have been missing mentions right & left!

Word to the wise: Birthday month is an AWFUL time to experiment with this! =(

    ReplyDelete
  13. Kristin Drysdale I feel lost without it. This will be a long adjustment.

  14. Okay. Anyone fancy a scheduled public hangout?

Thinking of coming at it from the angle:
Changes to G+ for Prodigal Sons & Daughters: #WTF  is Going On?

Hosts, guests, speakers - all contributions appreciated. Yay or nay?

    ReplyDelete
  15. "Nay " -I only have been in G+ for a few years and only have been able to reply to few of my hundreds of circled peeps.

    ReplyDelete
  16. For my folder and note to Zara Altair  as info to those I am yet to meet.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'll sort something out tomorrow, Kristin Drysdale.

I'll check through Denis Labelle's catalogue of the forthcoming changes and see if I understand anything.

After being #LostInSpaces , I fear there's a huge, high-arcing learning curve ahead for this Prodigal Son.

  18. Jason Darrell Voting, ay. Maybe Kristin Drysdale could host. Yes?

  19. Jason Darrell as the prodigal, you deserve a feast. :)

  20. Seems Zara got tp me after some others. Not sure why she is missing Mentions, I keep missing her and she is perhaps closer to me than many others.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hmmm could not find any mentions about me in Chrome; nor this Denis Labelle; however am learning about the passenger outside rear view mirror as well as oodles of secret people who have been in Google for years. Thanks again Zara.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Absolute legend, Denis Labelle - bless you, squire. It's been too long, m'man, too long. Trust you're well ☺

    ReplyDelete
  23. Gary Whalen The Mentions are on the old Google+.http://goo.gl/BJSSak The stream simplified following conversations when people "mention" you on Google+. That feature is gone in the new Google+.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Shows how seldom I look at simplified conversations, Zara Altair . No wonder in my 2 years or so with the old Google+ few if any mentions were made of me there. Now back to review other comments.

  25. Zara Altair I have created a bookmark in my browser which gives me that info.
    Here it is :

    https://plus.google.com/stream/mentions

Browse to it and Bookmark it on your browser. I have it on Chrome browser and it works well.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Vivekananda Baindoor Rao Thank you. This will work when the old G+ disappears?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Zara Altair it should because it is a browser page. The classic interface provided an easy link to that.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hopefully you two will clue me in when you are able to communicate; Seems that Peter Hatherley is looking in from NZ ; maybe he can give me a few clues as to what is going on with the old/new Google. My sun not yet out this Friday around 6 am.
