ReplyDeleteGood point, I wholeheartedly agree but awful Nazi image.
ReplyDeleteZara Altair, but would you risk alienating some in the audience who do know a lot about the subject already? Would they not think it's a waste of their time to read what they mostly already know?
ReplyDeleteTadeusz Szewczyk, this particular 'nazi' was wonderful... if all nazis were like him - we wouldn't have any problems with the concept. Sgt. Shultz is an American comedy #classic.

ReplyDeleteMy grandfather and my mother's sister served in WWII and were both prisoners of war. Believe, it was not funny. Americans depicting that era as a comedy only shows historical ignorance.
Tadeusz Szewczyk, I totally sympathize... the last account of my Grandpa was that he was marched to Babi Yar... so I'm with you. I guess one would need to try not to mix events in different eras. Lots of bad things happened during the Crusades, but we still read with fondness book about Knights Templar... probably because it's historical fiction, not true history. That's how I look at this as well. It's a funny show but they're not laughing at what actually happened, if that makes sense... Anyway, don't mean to argue, being from USSR originally - WWII was very much drilled into me, on many levels.
ReplyDeleteThis show was very much a farce without any ties to what actually happened, thus it was acceptable, to me that is. What wasn't acceptable was the movie "Life Is Beautiful", because they did try to portray real events, with all of their gruesome details, and make a comedy at the same time... definitely not a good idea.
And the strange thing was that it wasn't even an American film, it was European. You'd think if Americans drop the ball on this occasionally, the Europeans certainly shouldn't, but they did.
C'mon guys don't you think you are taking this a bit too serious? Lighten up! It was humorous play on words. We all know the history of WWII (shees).....I bet you guys were a lot of fun to be around reading the Doonebury Chronicals, and/or Bloom County. This even goes further back to Beatle Bailey......I am going to bed.....this conversation is pointless.....G'night
