Announcement: Google Is Planning A Switch To A Mobile First Index
Gary illyes announced yesterday that in the near future Google will begin indexing the mobile versions of pages as opposed to the desktop as its primary index. Until this upcoming change, Google has always used the desktop version. The desktop version will still exist but will not be the primary index.
As you can imagine, this changes the way we will approach desktop and mobile versions of our websites and there will be a number of scenarios and factors that will require preparation and new planning such as:
• Consistent Content - Check your mobile page to ensure it is delivering the correct content.
• Structured Data - site owners need to make sure their mobile sites have structured data if they've removed it to lighten the site load
• Responsive Web Design - Sites with identical desktop/mobile content. The good news is that Responsive sites should be fine with this change.
Jennifer Slegg explains all of the implications to all of us. Thank you, Jennifer!
