What is a hybrid publisher
Is your manuscript ready?

Read and subscribe.

The traditional publishing industry is shortening the time for publishing from 12 months to 9 months. Writers are feeling pressure to produce. The myth of writing fast is promulgated by exercises like NaNoWriMo with a commitment to write 50,000 words in one month.

You may have noticed that your favorite writers are not quite in the game the way they used to be. And there is a reason, a quickly written novel has not allowed for editing and rewrite time.

The thrill of finally writing The End pulls writers to publish before the book is truly ready.

Read your story as a reader looking for plot holes, lack of character detail or motivation, scenes that drag or are unnecessary, etc. If the story isn't working it's time to fix or even tear down and rewrite. Remember that it is difficult to read your own work with an objective view. Find others to help you see your story realistically. Then fix the parts that don't work. Remove the superfluous, add details. Yeah, it sounds crazy take out and add, but in the right places.

I was fortunate to find an editor through a Slack writing group who views the details of my writing in a sympathetic but critical eye.At times we may disagree about a detail, but in the main his objective eye helps polish the story.

  1. Agreed. The pace of not just social media, but the general narrative in society to consume and produce in endless rapid pace to remain relevant in the "feed" is doing nothing good at all for the quality, not for the writer/artist, nor the consumers.
