I know the 2nd Amendment has been turned into something of a cult thanks to the money-driven interests of the NRA and its powerful lobby and I also get how gun ownership has been wrapped up into this pseudo-empowering, freedom-loving, government-fearing culture where emotions run high and logic is optional.
Still, let's look at those who live it day in, day out. Looking not at the violence end of things (like cops do, for instance) but the results, the net effects of gun violence. Look at the shuttered lives and the data and then tell me, straightfaced and with reason that this is what a civilized country, in the 21st century should be like.
Or, you can, instead read this, understanding the disconnect between the lobbyists and the lawmakers - all those who have something to gain and balance this with those who are caught in the battleground, who lose no matter what happens. Shooter or victim, there is no upside for them. And then tell me you're OK with that.
