Semantic Search and Inference

Semantic Search and Inference
David Amerland illustrates the importance of how vocabulary works with search. Understanding this concept facilitates web writing that is topic and concept related.

Understanding Semantic Search
Consider that in the eyes of semantic search, like in our own minds, there is no such thing as a 'keyword', but there is a 'key concept'. Something that is formed independently as a result of inference and may not even be specifically part of what is being indexed.
In my example of words, ideas and concepts associating with each other I have created three super heroes, each taking powers from a secret source, having something in common, with each other and each exhibiting specific powers and a relatively common intent.
Once indexed (in a hypothetical scenario) they would come up for search queries like "the just trio", the 'trio of justice" "superhero team". "team of superheroes" as well as a more specific query such as "invisible being who can fly".
What is of interest here is that with the exception of "invisible being who can fly" none of the other search queries have been specified in my example. They are inferred, logically from the association of words, meanings and concepts.
Zara Altair thank you for bringing this back. I've been writing about all this for so long it seems incredible the penny hasn't dropped for many yet.
ReplyDeleteDavid Amerland You are very welcome.:) Out there in the interface between business owners and writers I am astounded - not sure the penny is even is sight. :)
ReplyDeleteIt is quite possible that I have been seeing more pages in search results that don't have the words from my query in the returned snippets showing for those; the results contain terms that are related, likely based upon key concepts - it is something worth watching out for.
ReplyDeleteBill Slawski I too believe the results are far more conceptually based rather than exact queries these days. Obviously I have focused on this area quite specifically for some time so it's been something I've been following very closely.
