Your Name on Google

Your Name on Google
Reasons to use your real name on your Google account.

Why should you use your "real" profile name and "real" profile picture?

Whether you are a heavy Google+ user, like I am, or not, your Google account name and account profile picture can have much wider reach, and thereby impact on how you present your identity to others, than you may realise.

Your account name is used across all Google services, (though you can set a separate "from" name for email in Gmail if you need to).

Your profile picture will also show not only on your Google+ profile, but many many places across the Google ecosystem where you use that account: such as Google Local Guides, Google Drive, Google Play, YouTube etc.

Your profile picture will also represent YOU for anyone that has you as a contact on their Android phone, where they sync contacts with their Google account, and Android is the most popular mobile OS worldwide!

So make sure that you use Your Name on your account with a profile picture that represents you.

You can change that (limits notwithstanding) here: aboutme.google.com

Note: if you are immediately outraged at the suggestion that you should use your "real name" for your Google account please remember that ...

A: you are not "forced" to do so.

B: that if you wish to use an "alias" rather than your real name you can have the best of both worlds by doing so additionally, with a YouTube channel for example, by using a Brand Account under your primary Google account (upon which you use your "real" name).
