I find that in planning I prepare myself for many of the eventual possibilities, focus on the important tasks, and I am able to weed out some misconceptions and bad suppositions. I think planning fails in that you cannot anticipate all of the variables that you will face and so you cannot follow the plan without adaptation, but like Eisenhower says, it is indispensable.
