Brain Guesses, Predictions, Context, and Emotional Training

Brain Guesses, Predictions, Context, and Emotional Training

Revelatory presentation by Lisa Feldman Barrett.

You are in charge of your emotions if you take responsibility.

In The Sniper Mind http://geni.us/SniperMind by David Amerland we learn how snipers train to focus to the extent of having empathy and, yet, controlling their emotions.

Scientific research demonstrates the process for taking charge of emotions.

In a new situation, our brain guesses patterns from past experience. While the brain is searching without recognition we are in a state of experiential blindness.

Once the brain has a pattern recognition it can make predictions by connecting to the context. We need details to know what to do next. The brain arranges the details to create emotions.

We can change ingredient details to predict differently. More context means responsibility.

As we take responsibility for what we feel we can train our brain to examine the details in context to create emotional intelligence in action.

All it takes is practice. :)

  1. Zara Altair, on my way out and I haven't had a chance to watch the video yet, but your intro brings to mind one of my favorite emotional tools:

"I'll feel differently when I learn more."

Simple, powerful and effective help for emotions threatening to become flooded like a runaway train.

  2. Zara Altair. Just coming back to say I've now watched the video. I'm all for the opportunity to take the responsibility and feel that empowerment. What a relief, eh? Thanks for this, Zara. It's helpful to have another item in the arsenal on this topic.
