2014 Word of the Year: Culture

The term conveys a kind of academic attention to systematic behavior and allows us to identify and isolate an idea, issue, or group: we speak of a "culture of transparency" or "consumer culture". Culture can be either very broad (as in "celebrity culture" or "winning culture") or very specific (as in "test-prep culture" or "marching band culture").

I might suggest that we have amongst us here in Google Plus and conversations all over the Web, the very culture we need to carry us beyond looking at other people's cultures in the shallow way in which we sometimes tend to do. Culture need not be that thing that isolates us; it can be that thing which unifies us through appreciation and hope... hope that we are indeed more than our ancestors ever were or could be without the prolific generation of their progeny (us) - not because we're better despite them, but because they gave us the opportunity to grow from where they left off.

There is no denying that we know more than our neolithic grandparents. And there is no denying how much further advanced our children are today than we are - or will be before it's our time to say adieu. So before getting wrapped up into all the problems we have yet to face, let's just take a moment and give thanks for the amazing advancement of intelligence. Each generation plays its part, and the closer we get toward appreciating our One World Culture - with all of its many faces, colors, and beliefs, the closer we'll get toward achieving what our ancestors maybe only dreamed of... World Peace.

There's my 2014 Rant. I love you all! May our 2015 be full of culture.
