Numbers and name bearers. incredibly relevant Zara Altair
ReplyDeletePeter Hatherley Had a hunch you would resonate with this. :)

Zara Altair great share! Totally makes sense. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteGreat find, Zara Altair.
ReplyDeleteI had a client with synesthesia for numbers. Each number would evoke a personality. Some were smug, others clumpsy. It was fascinating!
Manuel Saint-Victor synesthesia is an incredible way to explore how the brain creates these associations. Must have been awesome to see first hand.
ReplyDeleteWe all experience culturally accepted forms of synesthesia, it's just that we have encapsulated them into particular forms:
ReplyDelete"Three's a crowd."
"Two a penny."
The Pizza shortcut to an epiphany:
"Make me one with everything."
And the above set was a countdown - and any which countdown brings an emotional, visceral experience.
Sure was, David Amerland. His math was slow but he had the best stories.
ReplyDeleteJohn Kellden true! I happen to be in the middle of another round of Surfaces and Essences by Hofstadter so... hop, skip, and analogical jump.
Thanks for the ping Zara Altair, very interesting. Especially liked the "representation" part. Something is represented by a feeling, a memory, an association. :) Makes me think that sometimes people think someone's language is strange and it's not the case, it's their thinking. And this brings me back to Mani Saint-Victor idea that it's important to get out of your box and understand what are the "representations" of the Other in order to speak common language and have a dialogue (or, John Kellden , a dance :)), not a fight.
ReplyDeleteTeodora Petkova The language that expresses unique thinking. Yes.
ReplyDeleteAnd...a dance not a fight!!!
The algorithmic union of the many as one is a highly significant factor in language research John Kellden aka #consonance
ReplyDeleteHistorically numbers were merged with language and were only separated over time. Understanding Phi for instance as the measuring stick of visuality in nature is a prime example.
Obviously for me the merging of maths with language has become an algorithmic reality ';D)
Maths is just a metaphor that encapsulates meaning Zara Altair
ReplyDeleteyes Peter Hatherley it's always tricks me ... Is mathematics invented or discovered ?
ReplyDeletePeter Hatherley Perfect encapsulation. I think of my daughter when she was a pre-schooler asking (many times) How many ones is that? :)
