My tips for newbie bloggers...

Gill Andrews put the question to me, what advice do you think newbie bloggers should follow? So, here's the beginning of my list.

1) buy a domain - immediately - and use it for your website (it's $10/yr, suck it up)

2) get on a platform that's easiest for you and your technological comfort level, so long as it easily provides you with a way to use your own domain and export your content should you ever wish to move

3) document your goals for your blog somewhere, including your future monetary goals should you have any. pin it on a wall, refer back to it often, revise it often.

4) have at least some loose definition of what it is that your blog content is about and providing. eventually make it into a tagline or mission statement.

5) think about your audience for your content - who are they, why are they interested in your content, how are you going to reach them

6) write as often and as long as you feel comfortable and able. the more content that you write, the better, but only within the goals of your blog

7) don't get hung up on features, functionality, design, and platform in the beginning. focus on publishing as much quality content as you're able, and as the user experience of your blog and content begins to dictate, start working on the design, layout, form and functionality.

8) don't promote, network. share with friends and family, share on your own profile when you publish new content, but don't go out promoting. that time is almost always better spent working on creating new quality content. instead, give them easy ways to follow you without forcing yourself on them.

(and install Google Analytics. because you'll thank me later)

Got others? Take umbrage to any? Let me know!
