Customers Not Rank is Your First Priority

Randy Milanovic gives reasons why shifting your goal from ranking to customer interaction is a wise strategy.

Nearly everyone we meet is interested in having a number one ranking on Google for their business. But what percentage of those people are really thinking about what that would mean for their business day-to-day? In today's follow up post to last week's Big Fish or Big Pond? Search localization changes everything article ( https://goo.gl/Gnfh64 ), I talk about the realities of dealing with the variety of lead quality that comes with such a listing...

Remember, Every Call Costs You Something

The great thing about using search for lead generation is that it brings in new prospects without the additional cost of traditional advertising. However, those leads still cost something – your time.

If you don’t have a plan for how to manage your time, your best prospects and existing customers aren’t going to get the focus they deserve. And all these great new opportunities you’re getting can potentially be more trouble than they are worth.

You only have so much time, attention, and expertise (or inventory) to go around. To make the most of it, you have to be selective… even when the people who are contacting you aren’t.

  1. Thank you Zara Altair I feel that if people put more effort into building relationships and less into ranking, they'd see much more success.

  3. Even so it's not an absolute truth Randy Milanovic  without visibility you won't even be able to begin to build those relationships, especially when it comes to organic ranking.

It's easy when you're No.1 in a major city but not everyone has that luxury. I think aiming high is a good thing not a bad thing. Many promise it but few can deliver especially for industries they have no background in.

The fact that my company is in the top 3 for over 90 local search phrases brings me a steady flow of business in a city the size of Christchurch. There has never been a point where I felt I had too much work but rather the perfect flow through the pipeline. A lot of it comes from long tail queries that really target the clients I'm really interested in

So I don't see it as one or the other, I see it as both

  4. Peter Hatherley of course I'm referring to the novices who believe it's a lottery win. Number one in what? Number one.
