The early 6th Century in Italy was a time when Rome was not the capital city of Italy. The population of Rome itself was around 25,00. Goods came to Rome from ports at the mouth of the Tiber river. The ancient port of Ostia was silting over and turning into marsh lands. The man made Portus still served Rome and the surrounding areas with goods from around the Mediterranean.

We almost lived there during our immigration travels... were told to stay away from Ostia, although people who didn't follow the mantra had a great time there. We wound up in a dinky town nearby, able only to find apartment in a Communist neighborhood, so you can only imagine how crappy life was there... Next time I'm there - I'll be staying in Ostia :)
